JAMES AWALT: Longtime trapper, and TFHA member for more than 20 years, has passed away. I do not have any details at this time. I have written emails to his grandson hoping he would send me an obit, but I have yet to receive it.
Jim Awalt was a TFHA District Director for many years and had always been a big help to the Tennessee trapper. The TFHA will always miss him, and our hearts go out to his family.
If I can get more info, I will pass it along to you.
CORTES SHULTZ: June 24, 2006 - Longtime fur buyer, Cortes Shultz, passed away last night. Cortes had been diagnosed with terminal leukemia some months ago. I have known this for some time, but Cortes did not want it made public.
All Tennessee trappers will miss him, as he has been the number one buyer of fur at the TFHA's auctions for the last several years (and the number one buyer of 'possums).
Cortes has been a member of the TFHA for longer than I can remember.
Our hearts and prayers go out to his family. We will forever miss him.
When I learn more, I will pass it along to you.
LEONARD HOLLAND: Leonard Holland, former President and long time District Director of the TFHA, has stepped down from his director's position for health reasons. Robert Jackson, a dear friend of Leonard's, has also stepped down from his director's position. This leaves TFHA District 6 without a Director at the present time.
It is the fervent hope of all TFHA members that Leonard gets better soon. Our hearts and prayers go out to you.
COMMISSION MEETING: On May 25th, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Commission held it's season setting meeting. I attended the April 19th TWRC Committee meeting that proposed the new laws that the TWRA was presenting to the TWRC for the hunting & trapping season for 2006-07. However, the April meeting was only the precursor to the May meeting. The laws for hunting & trapper were not finalized until May 25th, & there were some changes. For one, the TWRC closed one WMA. They also changed some of the deer hunting seasons.
As to the TN trapper, the TWRC added 15 days to the otter season for TWRA Region IV. The Region IV otter trapping season will begin on the Friday before Thanksgiving, & close on January 15, 2007. There will be a 'NO LIMIT' bag limit during this season. This has been long overdue.
Also as a help to the TN trapper, the TWRC has approved the Sudden Valley Supply Trap Pads if installed to the manufacturers specifications. These 'add-on' pads can only be used on 'OFFSET JAWED' traps, but they will fit many of them, & are far superior to the KG pads which were a 'one time' deal. These new pads will last through several catches.
It will require you to drill holes in the trap jaws, but once installed they perform very well. They are much thinner than the old Woodstream Soft Catch traps, or any other trap of that type that comes from the manufacturer. They are about the thickness of the KG pads once installed. I think that we may have a real winner here.
